Feast of the Seven Fishes

6:30 pm

December 24, 2017

All Day Event

This year invite your family and friends to join the family at Piccolo Trattoria as we celebrate the traditional Feast of the Seven Fishes, also known as The Vigil or La Vigilia in Italian. Originating from Southern Italy and brought over by Italian Americans, the Feast of the Seven Fishes is a celebration held on Christmas Eve commemorating the midnight birth of baby Jesus.

History of the Feast of the Seven Fishes

To abstain from consuming meat on Christmas Eve, Southern Italians would prepare several courses of an array of seafood. The celebration meal may include seven, eight, or even nine seafood favorites, with the most famous being Baccala or salted cod. According to popular theories, the number seven may represent the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church or the Seven Hills of Rome. Seven is also the most repeated number in the Bible, appearing over seven hundred times.
